BEIJING, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- China's urban population reached 690.79 million in 2011, exceeding for the first time the number of people in rural areas, the statistics bureau said Tuesday.
The number of urban dwellers in 2011 rose by 21 million to reach 690.79 million, 51.27 percent of the country's total population, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The rural population last year fell by 14.56 million to 656.56 million, the bureau said.
