350 participate in Yabloko party rally

MOSCOW, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- About 350 people gathered in Moscow Saturday for a rally organized by the Yabloko party, during which the organizer of the event was detained by the police.

The rally was being held to disclose to the public the so-called Churov list, which includes the names of people accused of being involved in parliamentary elections fraud.

Maiya Zavialova, a Yabloko party member and the organizer of the rally, was detained by police because too many people attended the rally, RIA Novosti reported.

"About 350 people participated in the rally, but only 300 had been sanctioned to attend. After the rally was over, Zavialova was asked to come to the police department to fill out a form for an administrative violation for exceeding the approved number of participants. She refused and was taken to the police office, where a protocol will be drawn up," a Moscow police spokesperson said.

Yabloko leader Sergei Mitrokhin was also detained for disobeying police orders, police said.

"Yesterday the organizers were told how they could get to the place of the rally. Arriving at the site of the rally, Mitrokhin decided to go through the center, avoiding the metal detectors. He pushed through the barriers, pushed passed the police and called on participants to follow him without inspection," the spokesperson said.
