French police accused of framing colleague

PARIS, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- French police officers looking into alleged criminal activity of colleagues have been accused of framing other officers close to the Socialist party.

French internal affairs officers have been accused of faking interview transcripts, bugging telephones and framing colleagues, Radio France Internationale reported.

Police commander Jean-Pierre Delcher said Thursday his signature was forged on false transcripts while he was seriously ill. Isabelle Sablayrolles, a police officer, claimed her signature had been forged on the transcript of the testimony of a witness.

The case dates to 2007, when four officers were accused of a tampering with residency papers. All of the officers had ties to the Socialist party.

When the case went to trial in January 2011, all four officers were found innocent.

Now, the inquiry itself has come under scrutiny for alleged faking of evidence and forgery. Interior Minister Claude Gueant and top Paris police official Michel Gaudin have been questioned by left-wing members of parliament Wednesday over the incident.

Socialist MPs have claimed Gueant may have been behind the false accusations.

"Claude Gueant is at the center of a system of power which has become a clan system in which you can see that he held all the strings," said Socialist MP Bruno Le Roux.

Gueant said Thursday he will sue Le Roux for slander.
