Prosecutor shoots himself in the head

POZNAN, Poland, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A Polish military prosecutor who shot himself in the head during a break in a press conference was in good condition Tuesday, a hospital spokesperson said.

The spokesperson told Radio Poland that Col. Mikolaj Przybyl would need reconstruction surgery to his jaw and cheek but otherwise "is feeling well."

It was unclear whether the military lawyer intended to kill himself when he abruptly left a news conference Monday at the office of the military prosecutor in the western Polish city of Poznan.

The news conference was called to respond to articles published last month accusing the Military Prosecutor's Office in Poznan of attempting to obtain information illegally during a probe into the April 2010 Smolensk air disaster.

Ninety-six people died in the crash of a Polish Air Force Tu-154, including President Lech Kaczynski and his entire delegation.

Poland's attorney general and president scheduled a meeting Tuesday to discuss "structural conflict" between the civilian and military branches of the prosecution service.
