One dead in S. African student stampede

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- One person was killed and at least a dozen others injured Tuesday in a stampede by applicants to a South African university, police in Johannesburg said.

Thousands of last-minute applicants had camped outside the gates of the University of Johannesburg's Auckland Park campus in hopes of enrolling for the 2012 school year, the South African government's BuaNews reported.

The stampede occurred as students tried to force their way inside just as the gates opened Tuesday morning.

A spokeswoman for Johannesburg emergency services told iAfrica.com that one woman died and more than a dozen others were treated for injuries.

At least three people were seriously injured, the spokeswoman said.

The female victim was reported to be the mother of a prospective student. She sustained severe head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The University of Johannesburg has four campuses. The registrar said more than 85,000 applications were processed for 2012.
