TIMMINS, Ontario, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- An Amber Alert for two missing North Ontario children was called off Thursday when police said they found them safe with their father.

The alert was issued early Thursday in the mining town of Timmins, about 450 miles north of Toronto.

Police issued photos of 34-year-old Zachary Johnson and his 4-year-old son Aiden and 1-year-old daughter Kara, both of whom went missing Wednesday night after their father visited them.

He did not have legal custody of them and they lived with grandparents, Postmedia News said.

They were located around 11 a.m. south of Timmins in North Bay, police said.

It wasn't clear how they got there, as Johnson's broken-down car was found in Timmins early Thursday.

It also wasn't immediately disclosed what led to Johnson's capture.
