BAQUBA, Iraq, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Five explosions in Baquba, Iraq, left one child dead and six people injured Wednesday, security officials said.

The blasts, which officials said occurred in succession, were the first acts of violence in the northeastern province of Diyala in the new year, Aswat al-Iraq reported.

"Five successive blasts took place by explosive charges at dawn [Wednesday] in Baquba's al-Tahrir, al-Mafraq and al-Amin districts, killing a female child and wounding six civilians," a security source told the news agency.

Among the injured was an officer in the former Iraqi Army, the security official said.
