Police killing trial postponed

CAIRO, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- The Giza Criminal Court Tuesday postponed the trial of 13 police officers charged with killing protesters outside two north Cairo police stations.

The ruling, credited to a judge being absent to assist with a third round of parliamentary elections, delays until Feb. 7 the trial of defendants -- accused of "killing six people and injuring 18 others by shooting unknown persons attempting to break into the two police stations" during the Jan. 25-29, 2011 uprising, al-Masry al-Youm reported.

At issue are the demonstrations and ensuing violence between police and protesters in which 860 people died -- many of them outside police stations.

The court had been scheduled to hear prosecution witnesses Tuesday, al-Masry al-Youm said.

An Egyptian court Thursday acquitted six other police officers charged with killing protesters outside a downtown Cairo police station.
