Pope set to visit Mexico, Cuba in March

VATICAN CITY, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict the XVI is scheduled to visit Mexico and Cuba in March, the Vatican said Monday.

The pope will land in Leon March 23 and be greeted by Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

While in Mexico, the pope will say mass in Bicentenario Park and meet with representatives from the country's 91 dioceses.

Benedict will be met by Cuban President Raul Castro in Santiago de Cuba March 26, ANSA reported.

The pope is also scheduled to visit Havana.

The Cuban government said it will grant 2,900 inmates prison amnesty in honor of the pope's visit.
