Muslim school bombed in Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- At least seven people were injured in a bomb explosion at an Islamic school in southern Nigeria, officials said.

The bombing Tuesday in Sapele comes three weeks after a nearby mosque was rocked by an early morning blast, the Nigerian Tribune reported. The newspaper said the blast may have been a retaliatory attack on the Muslim sect accused in the mosque bombing.

The bombing raised fears the Islamist terror sect Boko Haram has infiltrated the region, the newspaper said.

Nigerian officials announced this week that they would pay the medical bills of victims of the Christmas Day bombing of a Catholic church in Madalla, near the capital Abuja. At least 34 people were killed and 62 were injured in the blast.

"The figures we have at the Federal Ministry of Health are the figures that have been gathered by the Rapid Medical Emergency Response team of the Federal Ministry of Health. So far, we have been able to identify 96 victims of that blast, out of which 34 have been confirmed dead," Minister of Heath Onyebuchi Chukwu said Wednesday.

An explosion at another church in Jos and police stations in three other towns brought the Christmas Day death toll to at least 40.
