Woman missing after boat capsizes

BRISBANE, Australia, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Bad weather hampered the search for a woman who disappeared after a charter boat capsized off northeast Australia, police said Wednesday.

The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon in the Whitsunday Islands off Queensland, The Courier-Mail of Brisbane reported. Eleven people were plucked from the water by those on board another boat after the 30-foot charter vessel overturned in rough seas.

Police described the missing woman as a 31-year-old tourist from Ingleburn in the Sydney area.

The weather remained bad with high winds and 6-foot waves.

"There was a very intense, very violent storm cell that moved through the Whitsundays," a police spokesman said. "It made things very difficult for search crews."

The islands about 560 miles north of Brisbane are a popular destination for snorkeling, boating and similar sports.
