Protesters call for blind sheik's release

CAIRO, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. diplomats say blind sheik Omar Abdel Rahman is being treated with the best possible medical care in the U.S. prison system.

Protesters outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo have been calling for the release of the Islamic militant, who was convicted in 1995 of masterminding the 1993 World Trade Center attack.

Bikyamasr.com said protesters claim the cleric is innocent and should be released because of his deteriorating health.

U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson told Egyptian activists Abdel Rahman, who is serving a life sentence, is receiving appropriate medical treatment.

"The U.S. Federal Prison System has gone to great lengths to provide Mr. Omar Abdel Rahman with the best possible medical care, specifically: Mr. Abdel Rahman's medical conditions are being managed appropriately and he is medically stable; he is regularly evaluated by a team of healthcare professionals, including a physician, a physician assistant and a registered nurse," Patterson was quoted in a statement given to the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, Bikyamasr.com said.
