KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila was sworn in Tuesday for a second term.

His political opponent Etienne Tshisededi, however, has declared himself as president and plans to hold his own inauguration ceremony Friday, the BBC reported.

Tanks were deployed in the capital city Kinshasha ahead of Kabila's inauguration amid fears of protests from Tshisededi supporters. Election observers say last month's vote was too flawed to be credible, the BBC said.

Kabila has been in power since 2001 following the assassination of his father and was first elected in 2006.

Democratic Republican of Congo, Africa's second largest country, is two-thirds the size of Western Europe and has great mineral wealth but has one of the world's lowest standards of living, the BBC said.
