BEIJING, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- China generates nearly 40 million kilowatts of electricity through wind power and plans to double its capacity in three years, a government agency said.

The State Electricity Regulatory Commission said wind-power generation in the first 10 months of this year rose 57 percent over the same period of last year and accounted for 1.5 percent of the nation's total electricity output, Xinhua reported.

By the end of August, 486 wind-power stations were in operation across the country, generating 39.24 million kilowatts of electricity, the state-run news agency said.

The commission estimated China has exploitable wind-power resources equaling 2.38 billion kilowatts on land and about 200 million kilowatts offshore.
