KIEV, Ukraine, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Thousands of protesters in Kiev Saturday demanded the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych and early presidential elections.

RIA Novosti reported several thousand protesters from Ukraine's regions turned out in downtown Kiev for the protest.

In a separate protest, scores of workers who participated in the cleanup from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster have gone on a hunger strike near the Ukrainian government building.

The former cleanup workers have been protesting pension cuts.
