14 arrested in alleged fake marriage scam

Dec. 2, 2011 at 7:46 PM

PALERMO, Sicily, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Ten Moroccan and Italian men and four Italian women were arrested in Italy Friday in an alleged scheme to use bogus marriages to live in Italy, police say.

Police said one of the women, Rosa Cocuzza, was married to three Moroccan men but did not live with any of them, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

One Italian man and three Italian women in Palermo, the capital of Sicily, allegedly ran the fake-marriage scam, and the marriages were celebrated in Morocco.

Each of the fake spouses paid more than $13,380 to get married, police said.

ANSA said two of the four Italian women were charged with bigamy.
