Syrian troops kill 11 defectors

DAMASCUS, Syria, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Syrian army units fatally shot at least 11 defectors from the military in clashes Thursday in Homs, an activist group said.

CNN reported the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four other defectors were wounded in the city in central Syria.

The U.S. network reported another opposition human-rights group, the Local Coordinating Committees of Syria, said 15 people died when Syrian army units along with armored vehicles attacked farms west of Homs.

The LCC also reported raids and arrests in the Damascus suburb of Domeir, Qalet Mudeeq in Hama, and Baniyas.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said funerals were held Thursday for 12 army, police and security forces the news agency said had been targeted by "armed terrorist groups" in the Damascus, Homs and Hama areas.

More than 3,500 people have been killed in the Syrian government's eight-month crackdown on pro-democracy protests, the United Nations says.

The humanitarian committee of the U.N. General Assembly voted Thursday to condemn the violence in Syria and express its support for an Arab League initiative aimed at ending the violence. Syria was suspended last week from the Arab League, which demanded a halt to the crackdown.
