Some of big jackpot goes to Scottish cause

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- A Scottish couple who won a record-breaking lottery jackpot have given a million pounds (almost $1.6 million) to the campaign for Scottish independence.

The gift from Colin and Chris Weir of Largs, Ayrshire, is the second large one the campaign has received, The Daily Telegraph reported. Edwin Morgan, one of Scotland's leading poets, bequeathed almost as much to the Scottish National Party's fund when he died in August.

The Weirs, who became one of the richest couples in Britain when they won 161 million pounds (more than $260 million) in the EuroMillions lottery, are longtime supporters of Scottish independence. Weir ran for Parliament in 1987 as a Scottish National Party candidate.

"The only people with the right to decide Scotland's future are the people of Scotland themselves and we want to support the SNP and the referendum campaign in helping Scotland make that decision fairly," he said.

A recent poll showed 53 percent of Scots oppose independence, 28 percent favor it and 17 percent are undecided.

The SNP won an absolute majority in the Scottish Parliament in the last election and is pushing for a referendum on independence.
