Turkey nabs al-Qaida suspects

Nov. 22, 2011 at 7:21 AM

ANKARA, Turkey, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Turkey detained at least 14 people with suspected ties to al-Qaida, media reports indicated Tuesday

The Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star and Turkey's state run TRT network reported 14 suspects were arrested in a series of raids. The Daily Star said the raids were carried out in the city of Konya south of Ankara. Other reports said 15 suspects were arrested.

There were no further details concerning the arrests.

The newspaper noted earlier this year Turkish authorities arrested a group of al-Qaida suspects who allegedly plotted assaults against U.S. interests in Turkey and an attack on the U.S. Embassy.

Authorities also arrested al-Qaida suspects in Adana where the Incirlik Air Base used by the United States to transfer to supplies to Iraq and Afghanistan is located, the newspaper said.
