Clinton motorcade egged in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Philippine protesters threw objects at a motorcade with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but the secretary's car wasn't hit, the State Department said.

In Washington, the State Department said the motorcade was traveling from the presidential palace in Manila Wednesday when the incident occurred, CNN reported.

"The secretary's motorcade ran into a crowd of approximately 40 to 50 people, protesters," spokesman Mark Toner said. "They threw objects at the lead vehicle -- I believe it was eggs and paintballs, they maybe threw [rocks] -- and the motorcade pulled out of that area and went to the next scheduled meeting place."

Toner later said the paintball more likely was a paint-filled balloon. He also said Clinton wasn't in danger at any time.

Clinton is in the Philippines to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty.

Later in Thailand, Clinton pledged $10 million in aid and the assistance of a U.S. naval ship to help relief efforts in the flood-ravaged country, Voice of America reported.

She made the announcement after talks with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra Wednesday in Bangkok.

The USS Lassen was docked at a Thai port with crew and helicopters available to assist in recovery efforts and assess ways the country's infrastructure could be restored, she said.

Millions of people were affected by the floods that began in July.
