Libyan militias engage in deadly clash

ZAWIYAH, Libya, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Weekend fighting between two militias in Libya left at least six people dead, health officials said.

The New York Times reported the fighting that took place just west of Tripoli blocked traffic along a key coastal road between the Libyan capital and the Tunisian border.

With health officials putting the death toll at six and participants saying up to 15 were killed, it was the worst known violence in Libya since ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was killed last month, the Times said.

The newspaper said the fighting, which broke out Saturday afternoon and lasted into Sunday, involved groups from Zawiyah and Warshefana.

The violence occurred as factions jockey for position and Libya's transitional government works to stabilize the country.

Mustafa Abdul Jalil, chairman of the Transitional National Council, expressed a desire to see the two sides reach an agreement that would end the fighting.

"I want to assure the Libyan people that everything is under control," he said.
