BEIJING, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping called on Communist Party members to follow the tenets of Marxism and apply them to modern-day China.

Speaking at a symposium Friday marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Soviet Republic, Xi urged party members to learn from the revolutionary history and apply it to fostering the socialist modernization drive, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

Xi, also a member of the standing committee of the political bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said party members should keep their faith in socialism with Chinese characteristics as well as in Communism.

Party members, he said, must put people first and serve their interests.
