Syria accepts Arab League plan

DAMASCUS, Syria, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Syria said Tuesday it has reached agreement with the Arab League on ending the violence sparked by anti-government protests.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency said an announcement would be made at Arab League headquarters in Cairo Wednesday.

The league has been urging Syrian President Bashar Assad to order an end to the crackdown on protesters who have been demanding reforms or Assad's ouster.

The Arab League has proposed talks between the Syrian government and the opposition, CNN reported.

The United Nations has estimated more than 3,000 civilian deaths since the unrest erupted in mid-March during the so-called Arab Spring that has seen the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya toppled.

Assad last month ordered the drafting of a new constitution in a bid to appease the opposition.

SANA reported a massive demonstration Tuesday in Deir Ezzor in support of Assad's latest moves and against foreign interference in Syrian affairs as Assad met in Damascus with Lebanese and Druze leaders to discuss pan-Arab stability.
