YAROSLAVL, Russia, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A memorial service and benefit concert were held in Russia Sunday to honor the victims of the deadly plane crash that wiped out a professional hockey team.

The memorial in Yaroslavl, the home base of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, was held in accordance with Orthodox tradition, the RIA Novosti news service reported.

Under Orthodox doctrine, special prayers for the dead are offered nine and 40 days after death and then at regular intervals afterward.

Lokomotiv's charter plane went down Sept. 7 shortly after departing for a road game in Minsk. The crash killed 43 people.
