ABUJA, Nigeria, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A former governor of the Nigerian state of Oyo, a commissioner who served under him and a contractor were arraigned on corruption charges, officials said.

Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala, the former governor, Hosea Agboola, who was commissioner for local government under him, and engineer Femi Babalola face 11 charges for allegedly defrauding the government of $15 billion, The Guardian of Lagos, Nigeria, reported.

The charges, brought Tuesday by Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission before an Ibadan High Court, include gross misconduct, abuse of office, conspiracy, illegal awarding of contracts, acquiring property with money derived from illegal acts and concealing the ownership of the property.

Agboola was commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs during Alao-Akala's tenure until April, when he won election to the Senate. Babalola was the contractor in charge of all projects awarded by the administration.

Alao-Akala is a member of Nigeria's ruling People's Democratic Party.

Meanwhile, a lawyer for Gbenga Daniel, the former governor of Ogun, said he had been subjected to "unbearable conditions" since being arrested Thursday for alleged corruption.

"In the last four days, he has been subjected to gruesome interrogations by operatives" of the Economic and Finance Crimes Commission, Yemi Oke said.

Daniel has spent more than the required time in detention and should have been arraigned in court, Oke said. He has been allowed access only to his wife, he said.
