Amanda Knox to make final plea of innocence

PERUGIA, Italy, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. student Amanda Knox will make a final plea to an Italian court Monday in her attempt to have her conviction in the slaying of Meredith Kercher overturned.

Members of the slain British student's family, will fly into Perugia to hear the outcome of the appeal, The Guardian reported.

However, the family will not arrive in time to hear the testimony of Kercher's convicted killers, Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

"Just as they respected the verdict at the trial, so they will respect the outcome of the appeal," the Kerchers' lawyer, Francesco Maresca, said.

In June, two court-appointed experts dismissed key forensic evidence against the University of Washington student and her ex-boyfriend.

Knox and Sollecito, along with a third defendant, Rudy Guede of Ivory Coast, were found guilty in 2009 in the 2007 killing of Kercher, who was Knox's apartment roommate. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, will Sollecito was given a 25-year sentence.
