Nigeria to investigate student gang rape

UTURU, Nigeria, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- The government of Nigeria has vowed to investigate the alleged gang rape of a female student at the hands of five male students at Abia State University.

Minister of Youth Development Bolaji Abdullahi said police have told him the incident, which took place Aug. 16, will be probed, the (Nigeria) Punch reported.

"Just spoke with Hon. Min of Police Affairs who is now speaking with IG (Inspector General of Police) on the ABSU gang rape case. Justice will be done," he said.

A video of the incident has been posted online showing five men joking and laughing as they appear to sexually assault a woman, the Pan African News Agency reported Wednesday. The woman can be heard begging either to be left alone or killed.

The Abia State Government denies that the event took place at the school.

"The Abia State Government has carried out an investigation on this matter and the truth is that, the alleged video never emanated from the university. The victim and the perpetrators are not students of Abia State University. Those associating ABSU with such barbaric video should please desist from such," a government statement said.
