CAIRO, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- A newspaper investigation says it has found evidence the Egyptian government used snipers to kill protesters in Tahrir Square during the revolution.

A document obtained by Al-Masry Al-Youm says a government committee investigating the shooting found police fired live ammunition at protesters last January from rooftops overlooking the square.

Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy has repeatedly denied the ministry has ever had snipers in its security force, the newspaper said.

Al-Masry Al-Youm said the Interior Ministry documents obtained by the newspaper are classified as "top secret and not for publication."

Retired Gen. Mohamed Nasser, one of the founders of the Interior Ministry's international terrorism department, said the ministry has always had snipers.
