One of 2 crash survivors dies in hospital

MOSCOW, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A survivor of last week's plane crash in Russia that killed nearly all of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team died Monday in a hospital, officials said.

Hospital officials said Alexander Galimov, a Yaroslavl native who began his hockey career in 2004, died from burns he sustained when the airplane carrying 45 passengers and crew crashed shortly after takeoff Wednesday near Yaroslavl, RIA Novosti reported.

Forty-three people died at the scene.

Galimov, who had burns on 90 percent of his body, was sent to Moscow Institute of Surgery Thursday, along with another survivor, crew member Alexander Sizov.

"We did everything possible to save him," burn specialist Andrei Alekseev said.

The Yak-42 aircraft was traveling to Minsk, Belarus, when it crashed and burst into flames soon after taking off. The team was flying to Minsk to open the Kontinental Hockey League season against Dinamo Minsk.

Several former National Hockey League players were among the victims, including defenseman Brad McCrimmon, the newly appointed coach of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl club, the league club confirmed.

McCrimmon, 52, played 18 years in the NHL and had spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings.

Other recent NHL players such as Pavol Demitra, Ruslan Salei, Karel Rachunek, Josef Vasicek, Karlis Skrastins and Alexander Vasyunov also died in the crash.
