Holocaust survivors oppose SNCF donation

PARIS, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Holocaust survivors in Florida say they're upset with a deal between the state and French railroad company SNCF to fund a Holocaust education program.

SNCF America is a subsidiary of the French railroad that helped transport 76,000 Jews to their deaths during World War II. Holocaust survivors say an $80,000 donation to develop a curriculum focusing on France's activities in the Holocaust amounts to tainted money, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Friday.

"We don't need SNCF to whitewash its image here," Rita G. Hofrichter, 84, a Florida woman who lost her parents and other relatives in the Holocaust, told the newspaper. "It's really shameful that they think they can buy us with their blood money."

The company, which apologized for its role in the Holocaust last year, became involved in Florida while seeking to bid on a $2.6 billion high-speed rail plan.
