Palestinian prisoners launch hunger strike

BETHLEHEM, West Bank, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Seventy Palestinians imprisoned in an Israeli jail have launched a hunger strike to press their demands for prison transfers, a Fatah spokesman said.

Ashraf Zakarna said the prisoners want to be moved to facilities near their West Bank hometowns to make it easier for their relatives to visit, the Palestinian Ma'an news agency reported Wednesday.

Currently, the prisoners' families have to travel for hours, cross multiple checkpoints and go through "intense and humiliating" security checks to reach their loved ones," Zakarna said.

He said the inmates filed a petition seeking transfers with Israel's Supreme Court but the court rejected their request.
