Spanish police bust 2 drug rings in Ibiza

IBIZA, Spain, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Spanish police have arrested more than 70 people after raiding 30 properties and breaking up two alleged English drug dealing rings in Ibiza, officials said.

Spain's Guardia Civil officers arrested 73 British, Irish and Italian nationals for allegedly trading drugs in various nightclubs across the island off the coast of Spain, RTVE reported Friday.

Police confiscated more than eight kilos of cocaine, 7,500 ecstasy tablets and more than $250,000 in cash, authorities said.

Police also recovered more than 3,000 pills of pure MDMA – the main ingredient in ecstasy and speed – which is thought to have led to the death of a young British girl in July.

One of the rackets allegedly was in regular contact with other gangs in Britain who supplied drugs on the island.

Jodie Nieman, 20, collapsed in a nightclub while vacationing in Ibiza when she reportedly took ecstasy and died on the way to the hospital.
