EDMONTON, Alberta, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- A Canadian judge has fined a man $3,250 for refusing to have his suffering pet dog treated for a broken leg after it was hit by a car in Edmonton, Alberta.
Provincial Judge Ferne LeReverend set the fine for Kevin Truong, 24, after hearing prosecutors describe Truong's acts as "hideous and heinous," the Edmonton Sun reported.
Truong pleaded guilty Wednesday to causing distress to an animal under the provincial Animal Protection Act.
His mixed-breed German shepherd was hit by a car Dec. 19, 2009, and made it home with an obviously deformed hind leg, the court was told.
Truong took the dog to an emergency veterinary clinic, where an X-ray showed the leg had two fractures. The vet applied a splint and administered morphine, saying the dog was in "acute" pain, but Truong refused to pay for further testing or treatment, the report said.
Three days later, Truong took the dog to another veterinary clinic, but again said he wouldn't pay for treatment and left. That clinic notified the Humane Society.
Animal officers weren't able to find the dog and Truong said he had had it euthanized, but didn't have any documentation.
The judge also said Truong would have to pay his fine in full before he would be allowed to get another pet, which would have to be brought regularly to the Humane Society for examination.
