Canada nabs another most-wanted

TORONTO, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Toronto police said they were holding a man on the federal immigration department's most-wanted list Thursday with plans to deport him a second time.

Walford Steer, 39, was arrested Tuesday at a west-end motel with a 16-year old girl in his room. He was charged with six offenses related to allegedly trying to lure her into prostitution, the Toronto Sun said.

Steer was one of more than 30 people identified in early August by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney as wanted for deportation. In Steer's case, Kenney called him a "present and future danger to the Canadian public."

Steer arrived in Canada from Jamaica in 1993, but after multiple arrests was deported in 1999. A year later, he came back to Canada using fake documents, the Sun said.

In all, he has been convicted of 76 criminal charges during his time in Canada, including weapons, assault and possessing counterfeit currency, the Globe and Mail said.

In 2006, Steer sought refugee status to avoid deportation, claiming he would be killed if he returned to Jamaica.

If convicted of the most recent charges, Steer would serve his prison time and be deported with a government escort the day of his release.
