Indian Parliament moves on corruption bill

NEW DELHI, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The Indian Parliament approved an anti-corruption resolution Saturday in an effort to get an activist to end his hunger strike.

Anna Hazare said he would break his fast at 10 a.m. Sunday, The Times of India reported. Hazare, 74, a follower of Mohandas Gandhi, said the unanimous passage of the resolution made him "very happy."

The resolution pledges both houses to support the Jan Lokpal bill, which would set up an independent ombudsman to keep an eye on the government. Lokpal is the Sanskrit word for protector of the people.

The measure was first introduced in 1968 and quickly passed the lower house of Parliament but has failed to win approval in the upper one. Hazare began a non-violent campaign this year aimed at convincing Parliament to approve the bill.
