Speeding Afghan bus crashes, 35 killed

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A speeding bus overturned between the southern Afghan cities of Kandahar and Kabul Saturday, killing 35 people and injuring 24 others, emergency officials said.

Public health official Abdul Qayoom Pokhla said initial findings showed the bus driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle early Saturday, the BBC reported. Local media described the man's driving as "reckless."

Another government spokesman told Afghan media many of the injured were in critical or serious condition.

Kandahar provincial investigators were examining the scene, trying to determine what factors were involved in the rollover 25 miles east of Kandahar City, the report said.

The scope of the crash was large enough for the federal Interior Ministry to issue a national caution about safe driving habits, the British broadcaster said.
