KIRKUK, Iraq, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A U.S.-Iraqi military offensive resulted in the detention of 11 people, eight of them wanted for alleged terrorist activities, officials in Kirkuk said.

"A Joint Force from Kirkuk's Police, Iraqi Army's 12th Division and an American Force, have launched two security operations in Daqouq and Riyadh townships of Kirkuk Province on Thursday, the first through an air-landing and the second by a ground offensive," Sarhad Qader, an Iraqi officer, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The joint force also confiscated an undisclosed number of weapons and ammunition. Qader said the joint force was exposed to two explosive charges, but no one was injured.

"Such offensives would continue during the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holidays," Qader said of the raid conducted during the holy fasting period of Ramadan.

Kirkuk is about 200 miles northeast of Baghdad.
