MONTREAL, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- An early morning house fire Wednesday in Montreal killed a man and his son and left the wife and mother in critical condition, firefighters said.
The fire broke out in the kitchen of a two-story, six-unit row house before 3 a.m., The (Montreal) Gazette reported.
Firefighters found the 31-year-old man, his 28-year-old wife and their 3-year-old son unconscious inside the front door, police officer Olivier Lapointe told the Gazette. The father and son died, while the woman remained in critical condition midday Wednesday.
Damage from flames was considered minimal, although smoke damage in the unit was significant, the reports said.
Fire spokesman Luc Robitaille told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. no working smoke detectors were in the unit, which he said was "deplorable in 2011."
He said firefighters would be handing out smoke detectors to residents of the other units, several of which didn't have any, the CBC said.
