Toddler dies after escape from home fire

ALEXANDRIA, Ontario, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A child who escaped a fire that killed his mother and two siblings in Ontario has died as a result of injuries suffered in the escape, authorities said.

The 22-month-old boy, Maxime Desjardins, was injured Friday when his father jumped from a window of the family's burning home with him in his arms, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. News reported.

The child died Monday morning while the father, Martin Desjardins, remained in a coma and was listed in critical condition.

The mother, Sarah Cholette, and two other children,3-year-old Chloe and 8-month-old Jacob, died in the fire that swept through their two-story home in the eastern Ontario community of Alexandria, authorities said.

Ontario Provincial Police said the home had only one exit that was blocked by the fire's flames.
