LONDON, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Authorities say they're searching for a missing crew member after a tugboat sank Friday on the River Thames in London.
The Port of London Authority said two other crew members were rescued after the tug, towing a barge carrying a crane, overturned off Greenwich Pier in south London just before 11 a.m., The Daily Telegraph reported.
The Port Authority, the London coast guard, police, the fire brigade and lifeboat crews were involved in the search for the missing crew member from the tug "Chieftain."
"It is believed there were three crew members on the Chieftain. Two were safely recovered and were taken ashore," a Port Authority spokesman said. "A major search-and-rescue operation is going on."
Authorities tightened safety measures on the river after the 1989 sinking of the "Marchioness" riverboat, in which 51 people died when the boat collided with a dredger near Southwark, south London, the Telegraph said.
Last week a crewman on the Woolwich Ferry died when he fell from the boat on the Thames and under the propeller while mooring ropes were being untied.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
