Suspected bomber returned to Indonesia

JAKARTA, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A suspect in the 2002 bombing on the Indonesian island of Bali that killed 202 people has been returned to Indonesia from Pakistan for trial, officials said.

Umar Patek, allegedly a key leader in Jemaah Islamiyah, an Indonesian terrorist group, was returned to Indonesia Thursday to stand trial for the bombing, The Jakarta Post reported.

Patek was being held in Jakarta Thursday where Indonesian anti-terrorism chief Ansyaad Mbai told reporters Patek "acknowledged that he was involved in the first Bali bombing and involved in the Christmas bombing 2000."

Patek was arrested earlier this year in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where a few months later, U.S. Navy SEALs killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, CNN reported.

Patek is suspected of acting as the deputy field coordinator of the 2002 bombing, but he is also a suspect in a 2000 bombing, the reports said.
