ORANJESTAD, Aruba, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Aruba officials are asking the FBI for information on a man being held as a suspect in the disappearance of a woman off the shore of Aruba.
Gary Giordano, 50, was initially considered a witness in the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, 35, of Frederick, Md., but after an investigation, he was arrested in Aruba Friday, ABC News reported.
He told police he and Gardner went snorkeling about 6 p.m. Aug. 2 in rough currents and she did not return to shore. A search with ships, helicopters and divers turned up no sign of her.
"He was first interrogated as a witness and in that position, he was told he was free to leave," said Taco H.W. Stein of the Aruba prosecutor's office. "In evaluating his statements later on, we decided there were some things that were not correct and that changed our position towards him to seeing him as a suspect. At that point in time we decided that we wouldn't want him to leave the island."
Aruba officials were drafting a request to the FBI for a subpoena to obtain Giordano's phone records and other personal history so investigators can establish his activity leading up to Gardner's disappearance, ABC News said.
"Anything you have to ask a third party about must be subpoenaed," Stein said. "So we needed to ask the FBI, because only they can subpoena in the United States."
A judge ordered Giordano, who has not been charged, to be held for another eight days, Stein said.
