BIRMINGHAM, England, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A vigil was held Wednesday night in Britain's second-largest city for three young Asian men run down by a car as they patrolled the city.
Tariq Jahan, father of one of the men, said Birmingham must come together, The Independent reported.
"People have been hurt, families have been hurt, if we don't stop this and the people who are rioting do not stop this, there will be more people dying," he said. "It has to stop and we are standing here united."
Jahan's son, Haroon, 21, and two brothers, Abdul Musavir, 31, and Shahzad Ali, 30, were part of a group trying to protect property and keep the peace after violence erupted Tuesday night. A car, driven fast, plowed into them early Wednesday morning and then drove off.
Jahan said earlier Wednesday the attack "was not a race issue." But some Muslims threatened violence against blacks if police did not catch the perpetrators quickly.
One man had already been arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of murder.
