BAGHDAD, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Insiders, possibly guards, robbed the Baghdad Bank in Iraq of nearly $1 million, officials said.

The thieves made off with more than $850,000 (1 billion dinars) in Saturday's robbery, bank officials told Aswat al-Iraq.

"The robbing of the private Baghdad Bank that took place inside the bank on Saturday, took place by certain elements within the bank and not through an armed operation," said Qassim Atta, a spokesman for the Baghdad Operations Command.

Atta said investigators "need to check the identities of the bank's employees and those in charge of its protection."
