MILAN, Italy, July 29 (UPI) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi underwent wrist surgery Friday for carpal tunnel syndrome, his doctor said.

"It went very well, a quick and simple operation, without complications or problems," surgeon Alberto Lazzerini told ANSA at a clinic outside Milan.

Berlusconi, 74, was to be released later in the day and "will regain complete use [of his right wrist] in 10 days," the doctor said.

The premier had the same operation on his left wrist in October.

On July 15, Berlusconi was briefly hospitalized in Milan for a mild concussion after he slipped in the shower.

Carpal tunnel is a painful, progressive condition caused by compression of a nerve in the wrist, often precipitated by typing or other small movements.
