Faulty light system led to train crash

WENZHOU, China, July 28 (UPI) -- A signal equipment flaw caused the crash of two high-speed trains in China's Zhejiang province that killed 39 people, the Shanghai Railway Bureau said Thursday.

The bureau said a lightning strike led the signal system at Wenzhou South Railway Station to fail to turn the green light to red, which caused the rear-end collision Saturday, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

The accident revealed the rail sector's vulnerabilities in safety infrastructure and management, said An Lusheng, head of the Shanghai Railway Bureau.

Beijing National Railway Research and Design Institute of Signal and Communication, the company that made the system, posted an apology on its Web site on Thursday, offering condolences and expressing regret to victims of the accident and their families.

Besides the 39 fatalities, 192 people were injured in the crash.
