WARSAW, Poland, July 27 (UPI) -- A work by a major 19th-century Polish painter that vanished at the end of World War II has been returned to its homeland.
"Jewish Woman Selling Oranges," by Aleksander Gierymski, was taken from the National Museum in Warsaw during the final months of the war in 1945.

It turned up at a German auction last November but was pulled out after Poland's Culture Ministry intervened and negotiated its return from its German owner, the Voice of America reported Wednesday, citing Polskie Radio.
Gierymski (1850-1901), a forerunner of Polish Impressionism, painted the work during a stay in Warsaw in 1880 and 1881.
