DAMASCUS, Syria, July 27 (UPI) -- At least eight people were killed early Wednesday in clashes between residents and Syrian security forces outside Damascus, a human rights group said.
The United Kingdom-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the dead in Kanaker included an 11-year-old boy, CNN reported.
"At 3 a.m. Wednesday, Syrian security forces and army soldiers stormed Kanaker amid heavy gunfire," said a statement issued by the organization. "Some residents threw rocks at the tanks and burned tires."
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in addition to the dead, several civilians were injured.
The incident follows days of government crackdowns on protests in the country.
There was no immediate government response to the incident, CNN reported.
