Former Egyptian PM held for corruption

CAIRO, July 26 (UPI) -- Military prosecutors questioned the former Egyptian prime minister on corruption charges, military officials said.

Ahmed Nazif allegedly squandered public funds and sold state-owned land, apparently for his personal enrichment, Cairo's Bikya Masr reported Tuesday.

If a legal proceedings go forward in Cairo, Nazif would be the first official in former President Hosni Mubarak's government to stand trial in a military court, Bikya Masr reported.

Nazif will be held in custody for 15 days during his questioning, a judicial source said.

Nazif also is being questioned regarding his connections to charges against former Luxor Gov. Samir Farag and businessman Mamdouh Quleib, the report said.

The judicial source said public prosecutors transferred the case to a military jurisdiction because Farag is a retired army general.
