Iraqi police targeted in Baghdad attacks

BAGHDAD, July 24 (UPI) -- Iraqi police came under attack Sunday in a bombing and shooting incident in Baghdad, security officials said.

A bomb exploded outside a building in central Baghdad that once housed a government educational ministry and injured four police officers and two civilians, the Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported.

Elsewhere in the city, security sources told the agency other officers came under fire.

"A group of unknown armed men have launched an attack using guns fixed with silencers against a police checkpoint in southeast Baghdad, killing a policeman," the source said.

There was no report of other injuries in the attack.

Security officials were also investigating a fatal attack on a doctor in his home in the western province of Anbar, the report said.

Police said a group of armed men stormed the man's house and gunned him down and ransacked the house before fleeing in a car. Police sealed off all roads around the area, but hadn't found the group by midday Sunday, the report said.
